PREP WRESTLING: Roberts, Giulio win for Vikings at Rocky Mountain Classic

| January 19, 2020 1:00 AM

MISSOULA, Mont. — Coeur d’Alene High’s Drew Roberts (138 pounds) and Gunner Giulio (160) won their respective brackets at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic on Saturday at Sentinel High.

Hunter Schueller was sixth at 132, Jackson Washington eighth at 220 and Kyle Bridge eighth at 103 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished sixth with 132 points.

“Both Jackson and Kyle wrestled their hearts out,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “They’ve improved leaps and bounds throughout the season. Jackson started to turn the corner at Rollie Lane, and keeps working hard and showing improvement day in and day out. Kyle is improving as well. Hunter wrestled pretty well and ran into a couple of tough guys in the consolation rounds. Both Drew and Gunner controlled their matches in the finals and did a great job. They’re hard-nosed kids and we expect them to win those matches.”

Caden Hess was fifth at 113, Matthew Whitcomb fourth at 182 and Mahlon Clark sixth at 205 for Lake City, which finished 15th with 84 points.

“It’s a really tough tournament by the medal rounds, and I don’t think we were as sharp as we needed to be,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “I’m not sure if it was a momentum thing after losing in the semfinals, but we weren’t as sharp as we needed to be against the kids we wrestled today. Matthew wrestled really well and lost a tight match in the semifinals. He wrestled solid, but just made a mistake and got caught in the third place match.”

Great Falls won the tournament with 213 points.
