Gonzaga clobbers Saint Mary's
Katie Campbell and LeeAnne Wirth led a balanced attack with 14 points apiece and No. 16 Gonzaga crushed Saint Mary’s 74-49 on Thursday night before 5,611 at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane in a battle between the last unbeaten teams in the West Coast Conference.
Jill Townsend’s 3-pointer capped an 11-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 19-8 lead and then they held the Gaels to two free throws in the second quarter to coast to their 13th straight win.
Townsend had 11 points and Jenn Wirth 10 with 10 rebounds for Gonzaga (15-1, 4-0). Melody Kempton, a sophomore from Post Falls High, had six points, six rebounds and two blocked shots in 16 minutes off the bench for the Zags, who led by 32 points late in the fourth quarter.
Madeline Holland had 15 points for Saint Mary’s (9-7, 4-1).
Idaho 69, Montana State 68, 2OT: At Bozeman, Mont., Natalie Klinker scored the Vandals’ last five points, including two go-ahead free throws with 46 seconds left, as Idaho (8-5, 3-1 Big Sky) handed the Bobcats (8-6, 4-1) their first conference loss of the season.
Freshman Beyonce Bea led Idaho with 26 points and eight rebounds.
Allison Kirby, a junior from Timberlake High, had two points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists for Idaho, which plays host to Eastern Washington next Thursday.
Montana 92, Eastern Washington 54: Jenna Dick hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points, and Grace Kirscher, a sophomore from Sandpoint High, hit three 3s and added 15 points for the visiting Eagles, who were trounced by the Grizzlies in Big Sky play at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Mont.
Taylor Goligoski scored 21 points for Montana (9-5, 4-1 Big Sky). Madi Schoening, a redshirt junior from Sandpoint High, added 10 points for the Griz.
Eastern (2-11, 1-3) returns to action next Thursday at Idaho.
