St. Maries beats Sandpoint at old Bulldog Gym

SANDPOINT — Randie Becktel scored 20 points to lead the St. Maries Lumberjacks past the Sandpoint Bulldogs 50-46 on Tuesday night in a nonleague game at Sandpoint Middle School’s old Bulldog Gym.

The game was moved from Les Rogers Court due to a leak in the roof at the high school.

Eli Gibson scored nine points for St. Maries (6-3), which was held scoreless until the 1:13 mark of the first quarter. St. Maries outscored Sandpoint 20-9 in the second quarter after falling behind 13-3 after the first quarter.

St. Maries travels to Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

Kobe Banks hit six 3-pointers and finished with 25 points for Sandpoint (4-4), which visits Moscow on Thursday.

WALLACE — After starter Scott Mwinuka fouled out late in regulation, reserve Caleb Schroeder hit two 3-pointers in overtime, sparking the visiting Jaguars past the Miners in nonleague play at Kirby Krulitz Court.

Eli Gonzales scored seven of his 11 points in the extra four minutes for Genesis Prep (5-4).

“We had some guys step up,” Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert said. “Next man up. They played huge minutes for us, so I was pleased with how we ended the game. I was pleased with our defensive effort the last five minutes of the game. Early in the game we played selfish defense, but we buckled down at the end.”

Seth Neely scored 15 points, Mwinuka 14 for Genesis Prep, which plays host to the Mead junior varsity on Saturday. Friday’s scheduled home game vs. Priest River was canceled due to a scheduling snafu with the Spartans, Colbert said.

Carter Bailey scored a game-high 22 points for Wallace (4-4), which plays host to Lakeside on Friday.

MULLAN — Luke Trogden scored 29 points, including five points in the final two seconds from the free-throw line as the Tigers held off the Wampus Cats in a North Star League game at the Mullan Pavilion.

“Clark Fork just played hard, and so did we,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “It was a great, great basketball game.”

Cameron Garcia scored on a layup with 30 seconds remaining to give Clark Fork a 44-41 lead. Trogden hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 44. On the ensuing possession, Mullan freshman Blake Layton drew a charging foul with 2.4 seconds left. After the play, Clark Fork was assessed a technical foul and Trogden made a free throw to give Mullan the lead. A Mullan turnover gave Clark Fork the ball back. On the inbounds play, Garcia broke down the court and was fouled with .6 seconds remaining. Garcia made the first, tying the game at 45, but had the second waved off due to a lane violation. The Wampus Cats were whistled for two technical fouls and Trogden hit all four free throws to seal the game.

“Somehow, we survived,” Elston said.

Josh Constantin scored 16 points for Clark Fork (2-6, 0-2), which hosts the Kellogg JV on Thursday.

Mullan (2-4, 1-2) hosts the Priest River JV on Thursday.
