Lake City falls to Caldwell on buzzer beater
BOISE — Lake City didn’t come away with any victories, but certainly gained some hard-earned experience as it battled some of the state’s best girls basketball teams at the Timber-Lion Tournament.
After losing in overtime to defending 5A state champion Eagle on Friday, the Timberwolves overcame a double-digit deficit to take a late lead on Caldwell on Saturday morning ... only to lose 42-41 on a buzzer beater by the Cougars’ Courtney Williams at Timberline High.
Lake City (8-5) trailed 28-16 at halftime, then dominated the third quarter, outscoring Caldwell 20-5 in the period. The Timberwolves led 41-40 with 11 seconds left, but Williams drove toward the basket and banked in a running hook shot as time expired, Lake City coach James Anderson said.
“I don’t even know how to describe it, but that decided the game,” Anderson said of Williams’ shot. “I’m proud of our kids for coming out of the locker room down 12 points and taking the lead after a strong third quarter.”
Brooklyn Rewers continued her solid play in the three-day tournament, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, giving her a total of 59 points and 28 rebounds for the weekend. Jaya Miller added 10 points for Lake City, and Kendall Pickford tallied nine points and six assists.
Jade Martinez led Caldwell (11-2) with 16 points.
Although the Timberwolves went 0-3 at the Timber-Lion tournament, Anderson hopes the level of competition will pay dividends as his team heads into 5A Inland Empire League play.
“I don’t think we could have found three more physical games, against quality opponents, than we did this weekend,” he said. “It showed our strengths and weaknesses, and where we need to get better. In the end this will be really good for our team.”
Lake City travels to Sandpoint on Wednesday.
