A challenge for the New Year

| January 1, 2020 12:00 AM

It’s that time of year again. Time to dust off the old journal, set some goals and once again test your mettle by trying to stick to a new habit, regimen or routine for as long as possible. Forgive me for sounding pessimistic. I am not at all against new year’s resolutions as long as their fundamental purpose — doing something positive for yourself — isn’t overshadowed by a sense of obligatory goal setting. Accomplishing your goal will be more rewarding and achievable if you choose something that really speaks to you. Perhaps you would like to be more organized, feel more resilient and composed under stress, get out of pain or tackle another health challenge, or maybe you are looking to start exercising and eating better. The best way to ensure your success is to set yourself up with as many intrinsic motivators, checkpoints and team members as possible to make it happen.

The start of a new habit is often the most difficult time to stay engaged. This is the time where it may feel like your work is going unrewarded and as a result, begins to feel tedious and monotonous very quickly. One way around this is to look for ways to step beyond the norm and inject something inherently fun into your plan. One of the best ways to stay on target is to tackle your goals with a partner or team. You will hold each other accountable, be able to share your struggles and successes and pull each other along when the struggle is real. Regardless of what your goal is, you are likely to encounter some challenges along the way. If one of your goals involves your health, it is also extremely beneficial to have a health and wellness expert on your team to guide you through some of these challenges.

In addition to taking the time to investigate and correct the underlying causes that might be contributing to pain or other symptoms, I find there is a huge payoff in taking a look at some of the little “life hacks” that we can use to accelerate someone’s progress. These are often simple habitual tweaks that have massive benefits in the body over the long run. One of my favorite things about what I do is seeing those “AHA! moments” that people get as they learn to take back control over their health and see their dreams realized.

I find that when people are in pain or suffering from another health challenge, they are often inhibited from achieving life goals. My challenge for you this year, is to address those health problems that are preventing you from getting where you want to go in life. If you need help, I’m here for you.

If getting out of pain is one of your goals, attend my upcoming health class, Managing and Eliminating Pain without Drugs, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 7 p.m., at Vital Health in Coeur d’Alene. Fee: $10. RSVP: 208-765-1994 or register here: http://bit.ly/VHPainClass2020
