MOLLY MASON/Special to The Press Alex Edelblute, top, of Lakeland, beat Eli Espino of Jerome 3-1 in their state 4A 126-pound quarterfinal match Friday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

NAMPA — “It’s anyone’s ballgame right now.”

After the first day of of the state 5A wrestling tournament at the Ford Idaho Center, five teams remain within 37 points of the lead heading into this morning’s semifinals.

Highland High of Pocatello leads the way with 123 points, followed by Meridian with 116. Two-time defending champion Post Falls is third with 103, followed by Coeur d’Alene with 101.5 and Lake City with 86.

“We knew it would be close within those top five teams,” said Post Falls coach Pete Reardon, who has led the Trojans to four state titles in the last five years. “It’s going to be a fist fight from here. It’s going to be fun and interesting to see where it goes.”

5A: Post Falls semifinalists include: Roddy Romero (106), Ryan Graves (113), Braxton Mason (120), Lane Reardon (126), Isaac Jessen (132), A.J. De La Rosa (145), Ethan Miller (160), Isaiah Laguna (195) and Tyler Cook (220).

“All those kids we felt had a good shot to make it,” Reardon said. “Our guys that were seeded wrestled above or to their seed. The kids wrestled tough and fought hard. We made a mistake here and there, but I’m proud of the kids. It’s going to be another fun one.”

Romero (106), Lane Reardon (126), Jessen (132) and Cook (220) have head-to-head matches with Highland opponents in the semis.

Highland has eight in the semis, Meridian four.

“With our kids, we told them no matter what, just focus on wrestling hard for each other and things we can control,” Reardon said. “If we can do those things, that will help us the most.”

Coeur d’Alene will send Christian Paniagua (98), Dom Jessos (120), Drew Roberts (138), Nolan Randles (152), Gunner Giulio (160), Filip Mjertan (195) and Jackson Kohal (285) to the semis today.

“We’re pretty happy right now,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “It’s anyone’s ballgame right now. We expected some of those guys to get through, but Filip, he’s just dangerous and can throw you on your back at any time. He’s a dangerous guy to wrestle. Jackson has been wrestling at his best for the past month and is starting to get hot at the right time.”

Coeur d’Alene was runner-up to Post Falls in 2019.

“We’re kind of pleased with where we’re at,” Moffat said. “Meridian, they’ve got 26 kids in the tournament and that’s a lot of points you’ve got to make up. But there’s some big points out there in the semifinals, so it’s anyone’s game.”

Jessos and Giulio have head-to-head matches with Meridian wrestlers in the semifinals. The Vikings also have five wrestlers remaining in the consolation bracket.

“It’s going to come down to whoever wakes up ready to go,” Moffat said. “We’ve got a couple of seasoned guys in the consolation, so it would be nice to get them through to the placing round.”

Zach Macdonald (98), Caden Hess (113), Seth Nutting (170), Matthew Whitcomb (195) and Owen Hughes advanced to the semifinals for Lake City, which finished fourth in 2019.

“I think in the blood matches (consolation placing rounds), that’s where the North is going to show its strength,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “We wrestled well and I think we put ourselves in a good position for tomorrow.”

4A: Lakeland is fourth with 88.5 points and five semifinalists.

Alex Edelblute (126), Riley Siegford (138), Rhonin Edwards (152), Ryan Quimby (160) and Colton Boettcher (170) advanced for the Hawks.

Century leads the 4A team scoring with 103 points.

3A: Timberlake, behind eight semifinalists, is second after the first day with 100 points.

Brayden Herbert (126), Isaiah Evans (132), Ethan Jerome (138), Caleb Miller (160), James Billingsley (170), Joey Follini (182), Josh Yanez (195) and Trevor Cady (285) advanced for Timberlake, which finished 11th last year at state.

South Fremont leads with 124.5 points.

2A: St. Maries is fifth with 61 points and three semifinals after the first day in the 2A rankings.

Dylan Sotin (113), Sam Martin (132) and Kyle Sibert (195) advanced for St. Maries, which trails Malad by 10.5 points for fourth.

“The kids did great,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “The one’s that we figured would do well came out and wrestled hard and did a great job.”

Ririe, which has won the past five 2A titles, leads with 124 points.
