PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake City outlasts Lakeland in 3 OTs

| February 19, 2020 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — After the first meeting, a two-point win by Lake City at Lakeland in a game decided by a 3-pointer in the closing seconds, you wouldn’t think the team could top that effort in the rematch Tuesday night.

But they did.

And then some.

Junior Jack Kiesbuy scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the host Lake City Timberwolves outlasted the Lakeland Hawks 102-94 in a three-overtime classic.

“It was an insane game,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “From the opening whistle to the end, it was a track meet. It was a battle; it was physical ... one guy would hit a big shot, the other team would answer.”

Kolton Mitchell hit three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and five assists for Lake City (14-7). Seth Hanson, one of two Timberwolves honored on senior night, added 18 points.

It was the first time Lake City, which opened in 1994, had scored 100 points in a game in the U.S., Winger said.

“Brayden (Sundstrom; Lake City’s other senior) just played his butt off, and Seth had a great game,” Winger said.

Carson Seay hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points for Lakeland (16-4). Ben Zubaly also scored 20 for the Hawks.

Lake City won 72-70 on Jan. 7 in Rathdrum.

In the rematch, Lakeland led 27-16 late in the first half before Lake City put together a few steals and pulled to within 32-29 at halftime. Winger said that stretch was pivotal in Lake City keeping the Hawks from pulling away.

“Lakeland’s a really good team; they’re big and physical,” Winger said.

Kiesbuy was 12 of 13 at the free-throw line for Lake City, which finished 31 of 39. The T-Wolves were 38 of 82 from the field.

Lakeland was 16 of 23 from the line.

Lake City played most of the game without Zach Johnson, one of its three freshman starters, who suffered a knee injury in the first quarter.

His status for Friday’s 5A Region 1 tournament opener at Post Falls is uncertain, Winger said.

Lakeland returns to action Monday at home vs. Sandpoint in the loser-out first round of the 4A Region 1 tourney.

MOSCOW — Even in a loss, Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna believes his team is turning the corner heading into the 5A Region 1 tournament starting Friday night.

Alex Karns scored nine points for the Vikings, who led 32-28 after three quarters before the Bears finished the final four minutes on a 12-2 run at Bear Den.

“We got down early, but battled back,” Hanna said. We had a lead, and played a really good game for 3 1/2 quarters. We kind of got away from our game plan and were pressing to be successful and got out of system. But the way we’ve been playing, I’ve been pleased with how the guys are getting the job done and figuring out how to be successful. Personally, I think we’re playing our best basketball headed into the district tournament.”

Mayson Whittaker scored eight points for Coeur d’Alene (7-13), which travels to Lewiston in the opening round of regionals Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Brayden Decker and Blake Buchanan scored 11 points each for Moscow (13-8), which awaits the winner of the Lakeland/Sandpoint district playoff game starting on Feb. 26.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Jack McDonald hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter for the Tigers, who clinched the second seed to the 3A District 1 tournament with a win over the Badgers at Timberlake High.

“Jack really got us going in the first quarter,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “He’s our sparkplug for sure.”

Kellogg will be the top seed and host the tournament after clinching the league title with a 67-50 win at Priest River in other action on Tuesday. On Monday at Andrews Gymnasium, Kellogg (14-6, 5-1 IML) will face Priest River (4-14, 0-6) at 5:30 p.m., followed by Timberlake (5-14, 4-2) against Bonners Ferry (7-12, 3-3) at 7.

Zach Yetter scored eight of his 10 points in the second half for Timberlake, which limited Bonners Ferry to 15 second half points.

“We didn’t play very well on defense up there (a 67-56 loss at Bonners on Jan. 28), so we wanted to put some focus on the defensive end,” Menti said. “I was really proud of how hard the boys played. It was just a great team effort. Everyone that played scored and played great defense.”
