PREP ROUNDUP: Johnson’s basket lifts Vikings past Lewiston
• BOYS BASKETBALL
LEWISTON — It was one Coeur d’Alene needed.
Shorthanded, it got done.
Devon Johnson scored the go-ahead basket with seven seconds remaining for Coeur d’Alene, which held on late to beat the Lewiston Bengals 34-33 in a 5A Inland Empire League game at Booth Hall on Friday, clinching the third seed to next week’s Region 1 tournament.
Lewiston’s Jace McKarcher was fouled on a jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining. He hit the first free throw but missed the second, and Coeur d’Alene ran out the clock.
Coeur d’Alene (7-12, 2-4 5A IEL) returns to Lewiston (12-6, 3-3) to open regionals next Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Mayson Whittaker hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 11 points for Coeur d’Alene, which was without starting post Cameren Cope (illness).
“I’m super proud of the guys,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “We played the biggest team in the league without Cameren, and the guys battled their tails off.”
Coeur d’Alene held George Forsmann, a 6-foot-6 post for Lewiston, to six points.
“He’s a big, strong kid,” Hanna said. “Our goal was to keep the ball out of his hands, and we did a good job of that tonight. Defensively, we were good and offensively we were more disciplined. We took really good shots and were patient. We needed this one for some confidence going into next week.”
