Post Falls triumphs as Cd'A rests 'hammers'

COEUR d’ALENE — Two of the best wrestling teams in the state collided in a dual match Thursday night, but the timing was bad.

Post Falls won six matches by pin and defeated Coeur d’Alene 53-30 at Jordan Court.

But with the 5A Region 1 tournament around the corner at Lakeland on Feb. 22, Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat elected to hold four of his standouts — Dom Jessos, Nolan Randles, Hunter Schueller and Drew Roberts — out of the dual.

Jessos, Randles and Schueller are coming off injuries, and Moffat chose to rest them. Roberts was sick.

“I’m not going to make any excuses, but we had four hammers out of the lineup,” Moffat said. “I feel bad for the people hoping to see a great dual, but unfortunately we have to do what’s best for my guys.”

Keanyn DeGroat (182), Isaiah Laguna (195), Roddy Romero (106), Lane Reardon (126), Isaac Jessen (138) and A.J. De La Rosa (145) had pins for Post Falls.

Kyle Lara (132) of Coeur d’Alene was losing before rallying to win.

“I was awfully proud of the guys that we put out there,” Moffat said. “Even the guys that got beat ... no complaints out of the effort.”

Moffat said he’s optimistic all four of his “hammers” will be back for regionals.

BONNERS FERRY — Cooper Johnson, out since suffering an elbow injury at the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno in late December, returned to the line and won by decision at 152 for the visiting Hawks in their regular season finale.

“He was finally healthy enough to get back in there,” Lakeland assistant coach Zach Horsley said, “and hopefully he’s ready to go at districts.”

John White (182) of Lakeland pinned Nathaniel Varelman of Bonners late in the third period, avenging a loss to the Badger two weeks ago in a dual prior to the Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Next up for Lakeland is the 4A Region 1 tournament Feb. 22 at Lakeland.
