WATER POLO

KROC/CDA Water Polo Club wins pair of state titles: Both the KROC/CDA Water Polo Club varsity boys and girls teams succeeded in defending their state high school championship in Boise this past weekend.

Due to the growth of water polo in Idaho and in Coeur d’Alene, the CDA/KROC club entered teams in the boys varsity, girls varsity and boys junior varsity divisions.

The boys team beat Boise 10-8 in the championship game, and the girls varsity beat Boise 17-10. In the JV division, the CDA team fell behind early in the game in a 10-7 loss to Boise.

The Coeur d’Alene team has won the Idaho state championship the last seven years in a row.

In the Idaho varsity boys division, the KROC/CDA team outscored Snake River on Friday 15-6. The CDA squad got goals from Caiden Hartfield (4), Caleb Markowski (3), Daniel Simmons (3), Caleb Simmons (2), Ethan Halsted (2) and Owen Bartosh (1). Ethan Halsted had 3 assists. On defense, Caiden Hartfield and Caleb Simmons had four and three steals respectively. In goal, Levi Tullis and Jack Fritz-Hooper combined to only allow 6 goals.

On Saturday morning, the CDA club took a big first-half lead against Magic Valley and won 14-7. Ethan Halsted led all scorers with 4 goals, followed by Caiden Hartfield with 3. Additional goals were scored by Caleb Simmons, Daniel Simmons, Caleb Markowski and Owen Bartosh. Caiden also had 5 assists. The team combined for a total of 12 steals on defense, with Jack Fritz-Hooper leading the effort with 3. Levi Tullis had 15 saves in goal.

In the championship game against Boise, the CDA varsity team was inspired by the surprise return of Daniel Simmons, who had suffered a significant shoulder injury the previous game and had not been expected to play. The game started with a series of quick alternating scores by the two teams, leading to a 2-2 score late in the first quarter. Boise then pulled ahead with a goal late in the quarter for a 3-2 lead. Boise extended its lead in the half with two additional goals to pull ahead 5-2. At halftime, the CDA team made a number of adjustments in an attempt to shut down Boise’s strong hole players and open up its own offense. CDA was able to shut down Boise in the third quarter while steadily scoring goals through aggressive swimming and half-court play. Going into the 4th quarter the CDA squad led 9-6, scored once more, than worked on the clock and finished with the 10-8 win. Goalie Levi Tullis played his best game of the tournament, with 13 saves against a set of very strong shooters.

In the Idaho varsity girls division, the CDA/KROC club played games against Snake River, Magic Valley and Boise. On Friday evening the undefeated CDA girls played Snake River in the first round game, winning 14-2. The team scored with a variety of quick counter-attacks, drives, outside shots and scores from the hole position. The scoring was widely distributed, with goals from Emma Park (3), Emma Ramage (3), Hannah Dansereau (3), and Emma Fritz-Hooper (2) and also goals from Ashley Schneider, Rebekah West and Keilani Smith. Assists were recorded by Emma Ramage (1), Emma Fritz-Hooper (2), Ashley Schneider (1), Rebekah West (3), Hannah Dansereau (1), Keilani Smith (1) and Ryenne Ayers (2).

In their second game, the Coeur d’Alene women played Magic Valley, scored a series of quick goals in the first period and won 16-7. Goalie Morgan McBride continued to keep scoring by the other teams to a minimum. Hannah Dansereau scored 4 goals. Additional scoring was provided by Emma Park (2), Emma Ramage (3), Emma Fritz-Hooper (3), Rebekah West (2), Ryenne Ayers (1) and Keilani Smith (1). Ashley had a game-leading 4 assists. Olivia Stevens also had an assist.

In the women’s championship game, KROC/CDA started the game against Boise in a close first quarter, then pulled away for a final margin of 18-6. Hannah Dansereau led the scoring with 6 goals. Additional scoring was provided by Emma Ramage (3), Emma Park (3), Ashley Schneider (2), Rebekah West (2) and Ryenne Ayers (1). Morgan McBride had 13 saves.

In the boys junior varsity division, the KROC/CDA team defeated Bishop Kelly 11-3. Ryder Koch and Ben Simmons led the scoring with 4 goals each. Grayson Hartfield (2) and Luke Johnson (1) also assisted in the scoring. Jack Fritz-Hooper allowed 3 goals and recorded 9 saves in his first state tournament game.

The JV squad then took on Snake River in a very competitive second game. Both teams were able to score throughout the game, without either team being able to sustain much of a lead. CDA eventually outlasted the Panthers and pulled out a 10-8 victory to put them into the championship game with Boise. Luke Johnson led with 4 goals scored. Quade Castaneda added 3 goals in an impressive tournament debut. Additional scoring was provided by Ben Simmons (2) and Lance Emry (1). Luke Johnson also had 4 steals, and Jack Fritz-Hooper had 13 saves in goal.

In the championship game with Boise, Boise caught CDA off-guard in the first quarter and quickly scored 3 goals to take the lead. KROC/CDA then firmed up its defense and began working their offense. The teams traded goals throughout the game, with neither team able to pull significantly ahead. CDA played Boise even throughout the rest of the game, but was not able to overcome Boise’s tough press defense and the initial 3-goal Boise lead. Boise won the game by a final of 11-7. Quade Castaneda continued an impressive freshman performance by leading the scoring with 3 goals. Ben Simmons (2), Luke Johnson (1) and Ryder Koch (1) provided additional scores for the team. Luke Johnson created 4 additional steals for CDA, and Jack Fritz-Hooper continued an impressive first tournament performance with an additional 10 saves.

Hannah Dansereau led all players with 13 goals during the tournament, repeating her excellent effort from the previous year. Caiden Hartfield led all boys with a total of 10 goals in the tournament, closely followed by Ethan Halsted and Caleb Simmons with 7 goals each.

Seniors Caiden Hartfield, Daniel Simmons, Caleb Markowski, Levi Tullis, Hannah Dansereau, Emma Park, Emma Ramage and Morgan McBride have played leading roles over the last several years and will be missed next year, coach Mark Collingham said.

The club practices year round at the KROC Aquatic center and is open to all high school students in the surrounding area.
