Each year, members of Congress nominate students to four of the service academies, which then select from the students nominated. Nominations are made to the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy. A fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

To qualify for a nomination, students must submit an application with references and meet certain scholastic requirements under a deadline. Nominations do not guarantee acceptance and, if selected, students will commit to five years of service upon their graduation.

U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo nominated 45 Idaho students to the nation’s military academies for the 2020-21 school year.

“These students have demonstrated the best of Idaho’s commitment to service and country,” Crapo said. “This year’s 45 nominees have indicated a desire and willingness to pursue higher education in one of these academies, and I have confidence in their leadership and academic skills. I congratulate these individuals on their nomination and look forward to their success as they continue to represent our state well into the future.”

U.S. Rep. Russ Fulcher said of his nominees, “Congratulations to the nominated candidates and best wishes to you as you pursue your goal of attending one of the U.S. Service Academies to serve our country and represent the great state of Idaho.”

U.S. Sen. Jim Risch nominated 50 Idaho students to the service academies.

“Each year, I am struck by the exceptional commitment to country and leadership displayed by the young men and women who apply to attend our military academies. This year is no different,” said Risch. “These nominees represent some of the very best and brightest that Idaho has to offer. I congratulate them on this achievement and wish them the very best.”
