HARRIS: A fine complement

| August 28, 2020 1:00 AM

I was stunned to read George Silva’s letter stating that he had never heard of Kamala Harris! Where has he been? It is important to know one’s local government, but this is a national election! How can he declare Senator Harris “irrelevant on any issue” while admitting he knows nothing about her except that she’s black? To assume Biden chose Senator Harris because of her race is both parochial and ridiculous. She has never been defined by her color, but by her proven leadership qualities and inclusive world views. For the many whose view of Biden has been “lukewarm,” Harris can only strengthen his campaign.

Biden has experience and strength in foreign policy that Harris doesn’t, but can learn from, while her national, international and multi-cultural background can certainly broaden Biden’s leadership skills. Together, they can lead. It was a smart choice. It may be that past politics will no longer work for all of us and new ways of seeing the future and what can work is what is needed.

To Mr. George Silva: You are obviously a caring local citizen who wants to make a difference. Please use your mental abilities to rethink your assumptions about how others think and look beyond the obvious (such as skin color) for what’s real. You’ll be glad you did.
