Hughes, a senior, beat Skyview’s Josiah Lara 2-1 to win the 285-pound state 5A championship during the high school wrestling championships at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa on Feb. 29. Hughes, who finished his senior year 36-9, was runner-up to Lara as a junior. “Owen wrestled the perfect match,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Tactically, he was really good. It was a great way to end the tournament.”
