Coronavirus closures keep drivers’ licenses from expiring

The Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles has extended the lifespan of drivers’ licenses that either would have or will expire between March 1 and May 31. Drivers who ordinarily would need to get their licenses renewed in that three-month timeframe now have until June 30 to renew.

The response to the pandemic has sealed businesses and government offices for nearly a month, including the DMV’s offices. No timetable has been established for when the department’s lobbies will re-open to the public.

The decision extends the credentials for drivers’ licenses, training permits, instruction permits, commercial learner permits, state identification cards and most commercial drivers’ licenses. CDL holders will still need to comply with medical certificate requirements. CDL holders with hazmat endorsements or CDL holders who are not comfortable working with an expired license are encouraged to contact your local DMV offices to schedule an appointment to renew. If the local offices are unable to make appointments, those CDL holders should call (208) 334-8000 to arrange an appointment.

The DMV has already extended credentials for passenger vehicle registrations, commercial vehicle registrations, non-commercial vehicle registrations, farm vehicle registrations and temporary handicap placards. The deadline for those credentials that expire between March 1 and May 31 is now June 30.
