POST FALLS — Cameron Calabretto looked up, saw his opportunity and went for it from his centerback position.

Then Aidan O’Halloran didn’t miss his chance either.

Calabretto hit O’Halloran with a pass from 30 yards out, then O’Halloran buried a shot from 18 feet into the back of the net in the 67th minute as the Post Falls Trojans beat the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 2-1 in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools at Post Falls High.

“Cameron had them pretty well pinned into their half of the field, had some space and made a run,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “Aidan looked up, chested the ball and struck it. It was a beautiful goal and great assist. From a center back, it doesn’t happen every day.”

After a scoreless first half, Ethan Lawson opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 51st minute for Post Falls (4-0). Noah Cobb countered nine minutes later for Coeur d’Alene (2-2).

“I think they had us in the first 10 minutes, but we had them on their heels after that,” Gabe Lawson said. “We were able to dictate the run of play from that point. Defensively, we did a great job.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Ashley Grant stopped 29 shots on goal for the Trojans and Lily Foster had five saves for the Vikings in a 5A Inland Empire League draw in the league opener for both at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Hats off to Post Falls, they came out and played hard,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “They’re playing with a chip on their shoulder. We controlled most of the game, but you can’t win games if you don’t finish your shots. We came at them, but just couldn’t get it into the back of the net.”

Post Falls had a starter receive a red card in the third minute, forcing the Trojans to play a player short for the remainder of the game.

“The girls are playing pretty good soccer right now,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “I’m really proud of their effort and attitudes. The girls really dug in deep and really did an amazing job. Trinity Nichols was fantastic shifting back on the back line. It was a great team effort.”
