Tie with Bonners Ferry a win of sorts for St. Maries boys

- BOYS

ST. MARIES — Both teams had their chances, but in the end, it was still history for St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo’s program.

With the scoreless draw with Bonners Ferry on Saturday, it marked the first time in the program’s 19 years that the Lumberjacks have not lost to the Badgers in Intermountain League play dating back to 2001. St. Maries beat Bonners Ferry 2-1 on Aug. 29 in Bonners Ferry.

“We’re happy,” Renaldo said. “The kids played hard. Both teams played hard. Both Bonners and us are young this year.”

St. Maries travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

First half — none. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — BF 10, SM 5.

Saves — BF, Josh Beazer, 4; SM, Greyson Sands, 6.

LEWISTON — Midway through the first half, Parker Reed found a streaking Stirling Roget on a wide cross, then Roget did the rest for the game’s only goal as the visiting Bulldogs beat the Bengals in a non-league game.

“Some ways that goals are scored bring a certain energy or life to a team,” Sandpoint head coach Tanner French said. “I think that goal from Stirling really sustained the work rate that was needed to come out on top today.”

Shaking off of a team-wide funk from the second week of school, French said the Bulldogs were energized and prepared to make the trek south to Lewiston, which presents its own series of challenges.

“Mentally, playing in Lewiston is a test,” French, who has experienced soccer in Lewiston both as a player and as a coach for Sandpoint, said. “The bus ride, the referees, the heat, the pitch conditions — there are all of these factors that are weighing on their minds that they have to overcome. When you see them succeed, it’s almost like getting double the benefit from playing well.”

Freshman goalkeeper Roman Jiles ended another full start with five saves for the shutout for Sandpoint (3-3-1), which will host Moscow at Pine Street Field on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

First half — 1, Spt, Stirling Roget (Parker Reed), 20:00. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — Spt 20, Lew 5.

Saves — Spt, Roman Jiles 5. Lew, unknown.

Saint George’s 0

COEUR d’ALENE — Jake Overoye had six saves in goal for the Timberwolves in a shutout win over the Dragons of Spokane at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“We were able to start strong and maintain a good portion of the possession, which produced a pair of goals midway through the first half,” said Lake City coach Alan Rich, whose team beat Saint George’s 2-0 on Thursday in Spokane. “In the second half, we created several opportunities that we were able to convert and our defense was solid throughout the game. We are still cleaning up a few aspects of our game, but all in all I was pleased with the performance this afternoon.”

Jacob Janzen had three assists for Lake City (3-0-2), which opens 5A Inland Empire League play on Monday at Lewiston starting at 4:30 p.m.

First half — 1, LC, Devin Claflin (Noah Janzen), 22:00. 2, LC, Landon Lee (Jacob Janzen), 24:00. Second half — 3, LC, Bryce Allred (J. Janzen), 50:00. 4, LC, Jackson Henkle (J. Janzen), 63:00. 5, LC, Tate Novak (Henkle), 72:00. 6, LC, Ty Shaw (Novak), 74:00.

SANDPOINT — Senior Emi Lynch scored twice and assisted on another and Aspen Larson nearly got a hat trick as the Bulldogs beat the Bengals in nonleague play at Pine Street Field.

But more importantly — according to Sandpoint head coach Conor Baranski — passing and movement in the Bulldogs’ offense improved in Sandpoint’s fifth win of the season.

“For us to come out and win 5-0, that is a very good testament to the improvements they’ve made so far,” Baranski said. “I thought the timing of both the midfielders and forwards were really good today, which was cool. We spent three or four practices on just that.”

Lynch wasted no time getting on the board in the fourth minute, then Sandpoint set up its next goal with a little help from the Bengals.

Off a corner kick, Kiley Webster volleyed it toward the goal and somewhere in the chaos in the box, a Lewiston player handled the ball. Aspen Larson took the ensuing penalty kick, then wasted no time scoring her second on a shot from 25 yards out on the left side.

“We definitely tried getting her a hat trick — and she won’t like me saying this — but she totally blew a golden opportunity to get a hat trick late in the game,” Baranski said with a chuckle. “She spent way too much time and skied her shot on a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper.”

Later in the half, Lynch got her second goal off an assist from freshman Kelsey Cessna, who was in the teeth of the Bengals’ defense throughout the entire game.

“Kelsey Cessna had a very intense game,” Baranski said. “She was always in the thick of tackles, winning 50-50 balls and headers. Her assist to Emi was exactly that: She won one or two tackles and then slipped the ball through to Emi pretty impressively through a bunch of players, then Emi was able to finish.”

Lewiston nearly avoided a shutout off of a free kick in the waning moments of the game.

On the kick, Sandpoint junior Kendall Rubright leapt to win the header, but the ball skimmed off her head and fell toward a Lewiston player, who shot the ball. Cue Eastern Washington soccer commit Hattie Larson, who made a difficult dive from the right shoulder to make the save. She crashed into the goalpost, but shook it off and resumed play.

“I am so dang proud of her for putting her body on the line [like that],” Baranski said. “Hattie’s just such a beast.”

Sandpoint (5-1-0) plays at Moscow next Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.

“The girls played very well and kept their heads up to come from behind to tie it up,” St. Maries coach Amber Morris said. “Each game our defense is looking stronger and becoming more sure of themselves.”

POST FALLS — Kaylee Moate had a goal and an assist as the host Trojans did all their scoring in the first 11 minutes en route to the nonleague victory over the Chiefs.

Post Falls (1-3-1) was missing two starters, and dealing with an illness which is working its way through a handful of other players.

“The girls really dug in and fought hard today,” Post Falls coach Steven Mills said. “Kaylee Moate, Kamryn Becker, Kylee Ficken and Reagan Hartzell were working the ball really well today, and Trinity Nichols as a defensive mid did an amazing job tracking their attacks.”

Mills also praised Morgan Rust, who “had an amazing game organizing the defense and leading the offensive transitions.”

Post Falls opens 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene.
