Lawson shines for Trojans; Munson earns kudos for Hawks

POST FALLS — Ethan Lawson was just locked in for Post Falls in Thursday’s nonleague soccer match against visiting Lakeland.

A hat trick by halftime along with an assist, then another goal in the second half gave the Trojans a 5-0 win over the Hawks at Post Falls High.

“Ethan was just on in the first half,” said Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson, Ethan’s father. “We had over 20 (shots on goal) in the first half alone, but the Lakeland keeper was making saves left and right. Ethan was the only one not shooting right at him.”

Bradley Munson had 19 saves for Lakeland.

“He did a really, really good job,” Gabe Lawson said. “I was a little disappointed in our finishing, but you can’t take away what he did for Lakeland. He’s really tall and a dominating force for them. Our team played well, but he (Munson) was stellar tonight.”

Post Falls (3-0) returns to action against visiting Coeur d’Alene on Sept. 17.

Lakeland (2-3) hosts Lewiston on Saturday at Sunrise Rotary Field in Rathdrum starting at 4:30 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Bryce Allred scored on an assist from Jacob Janzen in the second minute to start the Timberwolves toward a nonleague win over the Bulldogs at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“We started a little flat in the first half and didn’t play as well as I know we are capable of playing,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We made some adjustments to the formation in the second half that helped and we played more composed and finished well.”

Janzen scored early in the second half, and Tyler Allred finished with seven saves for Lake City (1-0-2), which travels to St. George’s of Spokane next Thursday.

Sandpoint (0-3-1) opens 4A Inland Empire League play against visiting Lakeland on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER — Lucas Correa and Dennis Klein scored two goals apiece for the Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Spartans in Coeur d’Alene Charter’s first league match in program history.

“They’re coming together as a team,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Justin Nitti, whose team opened the season with a 2-1 win over Immaculate Conception on Tuesday. “They did a good job of working as a team.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0, 1-0 IML) travels to Orofino on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“We played with more speed and better passing compared to Tuesday (a 2-0 win at St. Maries),” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “It was a fun game to watch. We had a couple of good set plays and good looks at the net tonight.”

Michael Fonte scored two goals for Immaculate Conception.

Joao dos Santos and Jacob Simpson scored goals for Timberlake (4-0-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene Charter on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER — Junior Sarah Hines scored a hat trick and also had an assist as the visiting Panthers blanked the Spartans in Intermountain League play.

Kiley Cutler added two goals and two assists, Isabella Lucky had a goal and three assists and Cadence Wilson had two goals and an assist for Charter (2-0, 2-0).

“We started very strong both halves so there are no complaints there,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We just need to continue to build a complete 80 minutes. All in all not a bad first road game.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Timberlake on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — Sarah Boyer tallied the tying goal in extra time as the host Hawks (0-1-2) rallied from three goals down after 73 minutes to tie the Trojans.

Kaylee Moate had two goals and an assist for Post Falls (0-2-1), with her second goal in the 46th minute increasing the Trojans’ lead to 3-0.

“First off, kudos to Lakeland for never giving up,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “From our side of things the girls and I are of course disappointed, but we will take a lot of lessons from the game. I think we controlled the game and the girls moved the ball really well tonight. Unfortunately in the last five minutes we had a mishit on a kick, that the girls never realized had happened, then we deflected a routine shot that the keeper had covered into our own goal. So the girls need to know that while we made some big mistakes, we learn from them and hopefully will not make them again.”

On Tuesday, Post Falls is home vs. Mt. Spokane, and Lakeland hosts Sandpoint in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both schools.

“The girls didn’t give up,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “They were consistent with their gameplan, tried to have a better passing game and hit the back of the net.”

Izzy Hilliard scored in the 76th minute for Timberlake (3-2, 3-1 IML), which hosts Coeur d’Alene Charter on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Elly Schraeder totaled 14 kills as the host Vikings swept the Bears 25-18, 25-21, 25-13 in nonleague play at Viking Court.

Taylin Rowley had eight kills and 11 assists for Coeur d’Alene (5-0). Lauren Phillips added 12 assists, five digs and two blocks, Maggie Bloom eight digs and two digs, Sarah Wilkey five digs, Kate Phillips three aces, Lili Hare two blocks.

“I just felt we were connecting better with our middles tonight, which was an improvement from Tuesday,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said, referring to a five-set win over Post Falls two nights earlier. “And our setting was a lot smoother.”

SANDPOINT — Kylie Marneris had seven digs and two aces for the visiting Tigers, who fell to the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 in nonleague play.

Jaycie Pratt had seven assists, Brooke Jessen five kills for Timberlake (0-2), which plays at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament in Lewiston on Saturday. Sandpoint is 3-0.

PLUMMER — Megan MacKinney had nine kills, 14 assists and five aces and Quincy Rigg finished with 14 aces and five aces, leading the Panthers to a 25-11, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19 nonleague win over the Knights at Ron Miller Court.

“We had a bunch of kills spread out all over,” Coeur d’Alene coach Cynthia Beyer said. “It showed that our setters (MacKinney and Rigg) were thinking and making good choices. We passed the ball really well and our serve-receive was right on. The girls just kept getting better throughout the night.”

Rylee Peterson had nine kills, Julia Haag eight kills and two aces for Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0), which plays host to Genesis Prep tonight at 5:30 at Holy Family Catholic School.

Kria Peters had 14 assists and four aces for Lakeside (1-1), which faces Genesis Prep on Tuesday at The Courts at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls. Glory Olson and Nicole Middleton had three kills each for the Knights, Tenley Lambert had three digs, Olson one block.

“They served really well,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said of Coeur d’Alene Charter. “They’re a good team; they just keep coming at you. It was a good outing for us to show what we need to do.”
