Soon now, the bells will ring
In July, The Press published an article written by Harvey Mackay titled, “The Importance of Volunteering.” Within the article he wrote, “One of my favorite volunteer days occurs every December in Minnesota when I ring bells for The Salvation Army. Three hours of frigid fun — usually on one of the coldest days of the year, but when I hear about where the money goes, I get all warm and cozy.”
The Salvation Army Red Kettle season begins on Nov. 22. Yes, the red kettles and red bells will be present during the holiday season at various locations in our community.
The funds collected directly support many programs through The Salvation Army Kroc Center. Third grade students learn to swim, children are taught win/win games on school playgrounds, after school programs are offered to middle school students, food banks are supplied when shelves are empty in February, scholarships are provided for Kroc memberships, children are clothed with winter clothing, the water polo team is supported, camps are provided to families during school breaks and disaster support is at the ready in the event of an emergency.
As a school counselor, I directly observed the difference the programs make in the lives of children and families. Because of this, I support the Red Kettle Campaign. When you put any amount of change or money in a Red Kettle, know that The Salvation Army distributes the funds locally to support those in need throughout our community.
Mackay’s Moral: “When you help someone else, you also help yourself.” Being present at Red Kettle locations has allowed me to appreciate the stories from individuals who were helped by The Salvation Army.
I end with this important request for volunteers. You are now able to go online to register as a Red Kettle volunteer. There are many hours available at many locations. You may call (208-763-0647) or email: www.kroccda.org/volunteer to schedule.
