JASON ELLIOTT/Press Post Falls senior Sydney Shanahan builds on her lead in the 5A Region 1 girls championship race, winning in 18 minutes, 22 seconds on Thursday at Farragut State Park. Post Falls won its third straight regional title after placing five in top 10.

ATHOL — Some used Thursday’s state-qualifying cross country meets at Farragut State Park to get back on the right path headed into the state meet next Saturday in Pocatello.

Others used it as a chance to catch up on some reading while they waited for their race to begin.

Whatever works.

5A: Post Falls senior Sydney Shanahan won the girls 5A Region 1 title in 18 minutes, 22 seconds, edging teammate Sammie Wood by seven seconds as the Trojans won a third straight regional title.

“I didn’t do very well in my last race, so it was good to get a nice finish today,” Shanahan said. “It was a little bit of a confidence builder, but I just wanted to do my best for my team.”

Post Falls qualified its boys and girls team to state for the first time since 2005, with the Trojan boys finishing runner-up to Lewiston.

Lake City’s Carter Gordon and Maximillan Bazler, and Braden Dance and Ethan Garner of Coeur d’Alene qualified individually in the boys race for state after finishing in the top 10. Lake City’s Clara Stephens and Angelyca Chapman also advanced to state.

3A: Timberlake’s Logan Hunt distanced the field for the 3A District 1 title, winning by more than a minute in 16:34.5. Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Logan Davis was second in 17:42.9. It was the sixth district title in seven years for the Tiger boys.

While the team warmed up for its race, Hunt was reading a Middle Marks book.

“It’s one of the classics,” Hunt said. “It was kind of waste time I guess. Today, in the race, it was more about giving a good effort and staying ready for state next week.”

“That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. “The focus is on the bigger picture. His goal today was to go out, get a good, hard tempo and come cheer on his teammates.”

Timberlake won its 11th straight girls district title.

Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Logan Davis (boys) and Josie Yovichin (girls) qualified individually to state for finishing in the top 13 in 3A races.

In the 4A race, Sandpoint’s boys and girls teams each ran away with their seventh straight regional titles.

Lakeland’s Kailani Gilbert was the lone local qualifier for state in 4A, finishing seventh in 21:31.6.

The state meet in all classifications is Nov. 2 at the Portneuf Wellness Center in Pocatello.
