Lake City tops Post Falls, nabs state 5A berth

COEUR d’ALENE — Seniors Janae Rayborn had 16 kills and five aces and Kiki Cates 14 digs as Lake City punched its ticket to state with a 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 win over the visiting Post Falls Trojans in the 5A Region 1 second-place match on Thursday night.

“Overall, we played very well tonight,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “From our serve-receive and passing, we did a good job tonight. We were really disciplined at the serving line today. Our seniors really stepped up and led the team. It was back and forth at some points, but the girls found a way to push through.”

Lake City (20-12) opens at state next Friday at Post Falls High against Eagle, the third-place team from District 3 (Boise area), starting at 11 a.m.

Nellie Reese had 17 assists and two aces, Brenna Hawkins four blocks, Hanah Stoddard 14 assists and Jaya Miller 20 digs for Lake City.

Brielle Nagel had eight kills and two aces, Madi John eight kills and four blocks, Maya Blake seven kills, Brooke Minden two aces, Kassie Gardiner 20 assists and Ali Carpenter 19 digs for Post Falls, which finishes 11-14.

“We started out with lot of energy and on fire,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Things were going our way and looking good. Madi was putting up a good block all night, but we had too many errors tonight. We had a really good season, and I feel bad for our seniors (Kailey Moors, Amber Steenburgh, Carpenter, John). They put in a lot of work, and to go out like this is really hard.”

Kellogg on to state, Timberlake tries

again tonight

KELLOGG — The top-seeded Kellogg Wildcats rallied from a first-set loss to overpower the second-seeded Timberlake Tigers 24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 25-10 in the championship match of the 3A District 1 volleyball tournament Thursday night at Andrews Gymnasium.

Kellogg qualified for state for the second straight year, and the fifth time in school history. State is Nov. 1-2 at Lake City High, and the Wildcats will open Friday, Nov. 1 at 9 a.m. vs. the District 5 champion.

Timberlake (13-14) will play host to Priest River tonight at 6 for the district’s second berth to state. Priest River eliminated Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (11-8) in a loser-out match earlier Thursday.
