Charter boys, girls advance to state

- BOYS

POST FALLS — In its first year as a program, the Coeur d’Alene Charter boys soccer team has had a lot of firsts.

First goal, first win, first league win.

Friday, the Panthers added another — a first trip to state.

Jordan Gallegoes scored two goals and Ronan Malaghan added another as Coeur d’Alene Charter upset top seeded Timberlake 3-0 in the semifinals of the 3A District 1-2 tournament at The Fields at Real Life Ministries.

“The boys just wanted it today,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Justin Nitti said. “We got some good passing up front from Ronan, Quinn Clovis and our forward put constant pressure on them to get some through balls.”

Timberlake beat Coeur d’Alene Charter 2-1 in both league matches this year.

“Charter came out with some great pressure, and it was hard for us to match that pressure,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “It’s hard to beat a good team three times in a row. We just didn’t have enough tonight.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (10-5-2), the tournament’s fourth seed, will face second seeded Bonners Ferry (15-2-1) in today’s championship game to determine seeding to the state tournament starting next Thursday at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

“Ronan’s goal was off a free kick where he headed in a cross (pass),” Nitti said. “Our speed took them by surprise. It was just a complete team effort. It was a pretty awesome win for a first-year program to go to state.”

Timberlake finishes 13-3-1.

First half — 1, Charter, Ronan Malaghan (Brandon Chavez), 17:00. 2, Charter, Jordan Gallegoes (unassisted), 29:00. Second half — 3, Charter, Gallegoes (Malaghan), 58:00.

POST FALLS — The Lumberjacks, bidding for their first state berth after several years of oh-so-close finishes recently, once again came up one win short of state as the Badgers took control of the game with three goals in the first half.

“Remarkably frustrating,” longtime St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “But not bad for a rebuilding year. “Greyson (Sands) had a great game in goal. Kolby (Moore) played phenomenal, rock-solid at center back. Dylan Sotin played great.”

St. Maries (7-6-3) beat Bonners and tied the Badgers in Intermountain League play. Bonners’ only other loss was to Timberlake.

First half — 1, BF, Dalin Foster (penalty kick), 11:00. 2, BF, own goal, 29:00. 3, BF, Stephen Carlson (unassisted), 40:00. Second half — 4, BF, Daniel Walker (unassisted), 46:00.

Shots on goal — SM 5, BF 15.

Saves — SM, Greyson Sands 12; BF, Josh Beazer, 5.

POST FALLS — Isabella Lucky scored four goals — all in the second half — as the top-seeded Panthers beat the fourth-seeded Lumberjacks in a semifinal game at The Fields at Real Life Ministries.

“Tonight was about taking care of business,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “The girls put a great deal of pressure on themselves. Since we now know we’re heading to state, I think we’re able to breathe a little sigh of relief and focus on our task at hand for the district championship game tomorrow. We moved the ball well tonight and found the back of the net against a very strong keeper, so I’m very pleased with the result.”

Sarah Hines had three goals and two assists for Coeur d’Alene Charter (14-1-0), which faces Grangeville in the championship match today at The Fields at Real Life Minstries starting at 2 p.m. St. Maries finishes 5-8-2.
