BUREAUCRACY: Reason for mess at NIC

| October 2, 2019 1:00 AM

I watched the YouTube video of the Sept. 25 North Idaho College Board of Trustees monthly meeting and I read the bios of the members. It appears four of the five are career bureaucrats and the fifth is an attorney, which isn’t much different. NIC’s president is also a career bureaucrat.

A bureaucrat is defined as “an official in a government, in particular one perceived as being concerned with procedural correctness at the expense of people’s needs.” Bureaucrats do not think outside the box, they do not negotiate, and do not know how to make a deal. When the sanctions were handed out by the NWAC, NIC’s Board and president just correctly followed the procedure, which was to do nothing at the expense of some very fine people (coaches), their student athletes of the past, present and future, and the North Idaho community.

The terms of several of the current trustees expire next year. Hopefully, they will not run for re-election. They do not deserve to hold that office now or in the future. Ideally, we will get candidates from the business community who are not stuck on procedural correctness. They will be thinkers and doers who will negotiate the best deals for NIC.

Messers, Beutler, Stone and Berger spoke to the Board on Sept. 25 and they are good examples of the kind of trustees we need. As for Wood, please withdraw from the City Council race — we have had enough.
