Help volunteer rebuild his life

| November 30, 2019 12:00 AM

As part of the annual Press Christmas for All Campaign, we share with readers the stories of people applying for help. Here’s one of them.

After a failed marriage, “Matthew” lost everything — his family, his home and his job in the trades.

Matthew became homeless and developed alcoholism. Now he’s got a job through Kaleidoscope Community Services — and he’s working hard to get back on his feet.

“Matthew is one of those people who is always at the front of the line when something needs to get done,” said Pastor Gar Mickelson, executive director of Kaleidoscope Community Services. “Even though Matthew is still homeless, he shows up for work every day, and we have never heard him complain.”

In addition to his job, Matthew also volunteers at the 2nd Street Commons in Coeur d’Alene, where he arrives at 5:30 a.m. to serve breakfast and make lunches. He also uses his skills to help with building maintenance.

Nobody asked him to help in that way — he decided to pitch in on his own. Pastor Mickelson said that’s just the kind of person Matthew is: one who helps others before asking someone else to help him.

This year, Matthew’s needs are simple: winter boots, work clothes, a tool belt with basic carpentry tools to help him make a living.

It’s going to take a little Christmas magic for his wish to come true.

This is the 34th year Press Christmas for All has worked to brighten the lives of Kootenai County residents in need.

Each year, Press readers donate generously to the program. Every penny raised is distributed to Kootenai County residents. All overhead costs are covered by The Hagadone Corp.

The gift recipients are our neighbors who are struggling, including the elderly, disabled, homeless and mentally ill. Many who seek assistance from Christmas for All are working, but living near or below the poverty level.

The beneficiaries of Press Christmas for All are going to keep their dignity intact while the community provides a hand up to help get them back on their feet.

Press Christmas for All is managed by The Hagadone Corp., with assistance from CharityReimagined.Org. It is a legally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, run entirely by volunteers.
