A 'Seasonal Salute' to Children's Village
The Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society will be honoring the work Children’s Village does for its community with a concert of seasonal music at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d'Alene.
The free concert will open with a traditional, classic piece from Northwest Brass. "Canzona Bergamasca" was written during the time of Bach and Handel and is something of a baroque standard. It features a main theme and continues through many variations. This popular piece is a favorite among brass players.
This piece will be followed by "Ding! Dong! Merrily on High." It was originally a 16th century lively French dance in which the woman jumped into the air. The carol as is it known today was published in 1924, with words set by Anglican priest George Ratcliffe Woodward.
Northwest Brass will conclude this portion of the concert with two pieces based on arrangements from a cappella group Pentatonix. "The Carol of the Bells" was composed in 1914, based on the Ukrainian folk chant “Schedryk.” This arrangement deviates somewhat from the original tune, passing different melodies around each member of the quintet throughout the piece. "That’s Christmas To Me" is an original composition premiered by the Pentatonix. The piece paints a Christmas portrait with festive images.
The second group in the concert is Coeur d’Alene Brass, augmented by organist Ray Weaver. This part of the program will begin with the "Grand Angelic March," which includes hints of several Christmas songs with angels in them. Things will lighten up a bit with "You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." The third selection is an arrangement of the seasonal favorite the "First Noel." Coeur d'Alene Brass will conclude with a medley of holiday favorites: "Fantasia for Christmas."
Coeur d’Alene Big Brass will crank up the volume, opening with a triumphant arrangement of "Joy to the World." "Jingle Bells" and "Rhapsodie in Jingle" will also be performed.
