Juvenile succumbs to injuries from Sunday crash

A juvenile who was injured after a weekend crash on the Spirit Lake Cutoff Road has died.

The juvenile, whose age and name were not released by Idaho State Police, died after being transported to Sacred Heart, according to a Wednesday news release from state police.

The fatal crash that occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday, about six miles north of Spirit Lake, also claimed the life of John W. Hampton, 50, of Spirit Lake, who died at the scene.

Idaho State Police said Hampton and three passengers were traveling north in a red 2016 Chevy Traverse SUV when Hampton’s vehicle drifted over the center line while negotiating a curve.

Hamton’s SUV struck a red, 2004 Ford truck driven by Josiah N. Thompson, 44, of Spirit Lake, troopers said. The SUV careened into the northbound ditch and overturned while Thompson’s truck came to rest in the road. Thompson sustained no injuries.

Two occupants Hampton’s SUV including Dawn M. Hampton, 39, of Spirit Lake and a juvenile were transported by ambulance to Kootenai Health. The fourth occupant, also a juvenile, was transported by Life-flight to Sacred Heart in Spokane. Thompson sustained no injuries.

The occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts, troopers said.

The crash is still under investigation.
