Coeur d'Alene fends off Timberlake

| November 27, 2019 12:00 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Coeur d’Alene did just enough in the first half to take a 33-20 halftime lead.

Timberlake did everything it could to come back and tie the game at 53 with under four minutes remaining.

But the 5A Vikings pulled away in the final moments, getting 22 points from Skylar Burke in a 66-56 win over the 3A Tigers on Tuesday night.

“We played aggressive defense and I was very happy with the effort on defense,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “The first half, we played well. Timberlake came out very hot in the third quarter. When the game got tied up, I was proud of our girls for staying focused and hitting some big shots.”

Madi Symons scored 17 points for Coeur d’Alene (2-0), which travels to Richland on Saturday.

“They had a big second quarter and jumped out to a lead,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We had a good start to the third quarter and tied the game in the fourth, but committed three turnovers in a row. We were able to make it a game when it was looking like they’d run away with it. Coeur d’Alene’s a good team and extremely athletic.”

Brooke Jessen scored 20 points, Blayre Jeffs 14 points for Timberlake (3-2), which hosts Lewiston on Dec. 7.

“She’s probably our fastest, quickest girl on the team,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Pretty tough-nosed, good defender, and when she knocks down one it’s possible she can knock down four in a row.”
