A Spirit Lake mother and a child were treated and released after a Sunday car accident killed one and left another in critical condition.

Dawn Hampton, 39, and a juvenile passenger were treated and released from Kootenai Health, according to the Idaho State Police. Another child was airlifted from the scene to Sacred Heart Medical Center and remains in critical condition.

The late-morning accident happened on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road. John Hampton, Dawn’s husband, perished after his northbound SUV crossed the center line, hitting a truck driven by Josiah Thompson, also of Spirit Lake. Thompson was not injured in the crash. All occupants were wearing seatbelts, according to ISP.

John, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is still under investigation.
