COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College’s wrestling team almost celebrated like it was 2015 all over again.

Almost.

But alas, almost doesn’t quite count in wrestling.

NIC, ranked 11th in this week’s NJCAA poll, fell to third-ranked Clackamas 22-20 after dispatching 13th-ranked Northwest College of Powell, Wyo., 43-8 earlier on Friday at Christianson Gym.

NIC last beat Clackamas — the defending NJCAA champions — in a dual in January 2015 (21-16) in Oregon City.

“It was a back-and-forth match against Clackamas,” first-year NIC coach Mike Sebaaly said. “We got caught at 174 that could have won the dual for us, and it wound up being a real big swing match. We had some good matches, and it came down to heavyweight where we gave up a takedown trying to win the match.”

Isaac Lopez (125 pounds), Salvador Silva (149) and Jacob Swift (157) won both matches on the night for NIC.

“Isaac has been on fire to start the season,” Sebaaly said. “Salvador had a big win and has been wrestling well since the Trapper Open (Nov. 9 in Powell, Wyo.). We wrestled a lot better tonight.”

NIC hosts the Cardinal Duals today, facing Umpqua, Highline, Simon Fraser and Corban starting at noon.
