Vikings a winner in Symons' debut as coach

| November 22, 2019 12:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Junior Jaelyn Brainard-Adams hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 19 points, and the Coeur d’Alene Vikings were a winner in Nicole Symons’ debut as head coach, 85-58 over the Lakeland Hawks in nonleague play Thursday at Hawk Court.

Freshman Madi Symons, daughter of the coach, added 17 points for Coeur d’Alene.

“We played well,” Nicole Symons said. “Pretty sloppy in the first half but cleaned it up. Played hard and learned to play smarter as the game went on.”

Katy Ryan had 15 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots for Lakeland (1-2), and Addisen Kiefer added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

“They put quite a bit of full court pressure on us, and they sped the game up,” said Lakeland coach Steve Seymour, whose Hawks committed 30 turnovers. “We put points on the board, but we didn’t keep them from seemingly scoring at will.”

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene travels to Timberlake, and Lakeland is home vs. St. Maries.

SPIRIT LAKE — In a game of wild momentum shifts, the host Tigers pulled away late to fend off the visiting Bulldogs in nonleague play.

Sandpoint jumped out to a 9-2 lead before Timberlake got rolling and led 24-13 after one quarter.

The Tigers led by 14 at halftime, only to see the Bulldogs close to within five points in the third quarter. It went back and forth that way to the end.

“They tried to trap in the half-court pretty much the whole game,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “When we handled it well, we got layins. When we didn’t, they got turnovers.”

Blayre Jeffs scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half for Timberlake (2-1). Brooke Jessen scored 10 of her 16 in the first half, Taryn Soumas 8 of her 12 before intermission.

“They hit their first three or four shots in a row, and then we started playing well at both ends,” Miller said. “We shared the ball really well, found the open person and made some shots.”

Two nights earlier, Timberlake committed 40 turnovers in a 42-28 loss at Post Falls — a game the Tigers were still in until the closing minutes.

“The last game we saw some pressure and really, really struggled with it,” Miller said. “It was nice to see them learn from their mistakes.”

Hattie Larson led Sandpoint (1-1) with 10 points.
