Lloyd A. Lider, 98

Lloyd A. Lider passed away on Nov. 12, 2019, at the age of 98. He was born July 14, 1921, in Woodland, Calif., and was raised in nearby Esparto, where he grew up with six siblings on the family farm. The Lider children were instilled with a great appreciation for the outdoors and pursued activities such as fishing and hunting throughout their lives.

Lloyd attended the University of California, Davis until his studies were interrupted by World War II. He served in the Army as a 1st Lt. in Europe; by late 1945, he was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, with the U.S. Army First Infantry Division. He served as a security officer for foreign correspondents covering the trials for Nazi war criminals. One of those correspondents, a Polish journalist, introduced Lloyd to his step-daughter, Isabella. The magic happened; the two fell in love and were married in April, 1946, in the castle in Stein, Germany, a suburb of Nuremberg.

The newlyweds made their home back in Davis, where Lloyd resumed his studies, earned his Ph.D. and joined the faculty at the university as a professor of viticulture and enology. Throughout his teaching career, and after his retirement from the University in 1984, Lloyd traveled the globe as a consultant, sharing his wisdom of grapes and vineyards. Isabella was always along for these trips, where they made lifelong friends.

Lloyd was preceded in death by Isabella, his wife of 72 years; his daughter, Alice Lider Carroll; and his six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son, Edward (Joyce) Lider; three grandchildren: Matthew (Betty) Lider, Julie (John) Henderson and Steven (Lisa) Carroll; and four great-grandchildren.

Per Lloyd’s request, there will be no service. We express our gratitude to the kind and patient folks at the Village at Orchard Ridge, as well as to the team at Hospice of North Idaho, for assisting Lloyd in his final days and for helping us understand what he was experiencing.
