Events, freebies highlight Veterans Day weekend

This Veterans Day weekend is full of events and special offers for local veterans, their families and the community at large. Check out what’s happening in your neck of the woods and where you can honor your hometown heroes:

SATURDAY, NOV. 9

8 a.m. - noon | Careywood Coffee, 6101 Highway 54, Athol | Coffee in Careywood | Free coffee for veterans and active service members. Buck Knives door prizes.

9 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Cabela’s, 101 N. Cabela Way, Post Falls | Legendary Salute | All active military, veterans, police, firefighters, first responders, EMS and their families are invited to this event recognizing and honoring local heroes for their service. Free coffee and doughnuts from 9-10 a.m. Free hot dogs from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

10 a.m. | Lakeland High School, 15601 Highway 41, Rathdrum | Rathdrum Honors Veterans | All veterans are invited to this ceremony, which gives special thanks to Southwest Asia veterans. Free and open to the community. The Distinguished Veteran of the Year for 2019 will be named.

Noon | McEuen Park, near the pavilion | Rally in honor of Veterans Day | This patriotic rally will feature music and more.

SUNDAY, NOV. 10

5 - 7 p.m. | VFW Roy Racy Post 1473 Highway 41 & New Hampshire, Spirit Lake | Appreciation Dinner | Free turkey dinner for veterans and one guest. Children ages 10 and under eat for free. Cost for non-veterans is $5. Take-out meals available.

MONDAY, NOV. 11

All day | The Roosevelt Inn, 105 E. Wallace Ave., Coeur d’Alene | This bed and breakfast is offering a free night’s stay to any veteran on Nov. 11. There are 14 rooms available. Proof of military service required.

7 a.m. - 8 p.m. | Metro Express Car Wash, 3131 Conference Drive, Coeur d’Alene | Free car washes for veterans and current military service personnel.

10 a.m. - 6 p.m. | American Legion Post 143, 138 E. Poleline Ave., Post Falls | View artifacts dating back to the Civil War. Aviation items and pieces from the Pappy Boyington Museum will be on display. Free and open to the public.

10:45 a.m. | McEuen Park, Coeur d’Alene | Veterans Day Assembly

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Hayden City Hall, 8930 N. Government Way | Veterans Day Ceremony | All are invited to attend this ceremony. The Distinguished Veteran of the Year for 2019 will be named. Free refreshments at City Hall after the ceremony.

11 a.m. - 4 p.m. | Texas Roadhouse, 402 W. Neider Ave., Coeur d’Alene | Free lunch | All veterans (including active, retired or former U.S. military) can choose one of 10 entrees from a special Veterans Day menu. Proof of service includes military or VA card, or discharge papers.

11 a.m. - 10 p.m. | Sweet Lou’s, 601 E. Front Ave. and 477474 U.S. 95, Ponderay | Free steak dinner for veterans | Current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces will receive a free meal. Must present valid military ID.

2 - 3 p.m. | Spirit Lake Elementary | Veterans Day assembly | Veterans are individually recognized and honored by third-grade students. The Timberlake High School band will also perform.

6 - 8 p.m. | Human Rights Education Institute, 414 W. Fort Grounds Drive, Coeur d’Alene | Vets Paint Free | Veterans are invited to take part in a free painting class where they will paint a 16-inch x 20-inch American flag. Beginner artists welcome. To register, visit www.snackandpaint.com
