GOLF: The ultimate pro

| November 3, 2019 1:00 AM

In Tuesday’s sports section there was an article about Tiger Woods tying Sam Sneed for the most PGA wins (82). There is another PGA. It is called the LPGA (for ladies). Neither Woods nor Snead holds the most professional golfer wins record. That distinction belongs to Kathy Whitworth.

Ms. Whitworth (whom I have met a few times and who carries her record with dignity and class) won 88 LPGA tournaments, more than anyone on the PGA or the LPGA tours. She became the first woman to reach earnings of $1 million on the LPGA tour, an almost unfathomable accomplishment.

If Coeur d’Alene Press readers Google Kathy Whitworth, they will discover a gem of a success story, one of overcoming adversity that would put Tiger Woods’ comeback to the back lot.

And while I am at it, the greatest men’s pro golf comeback does not belong to Tiger Woods. That honor is held by Ben Hogan. The adversities suffered by Woods (many self-imposed) do not come close to what Hogan had to overcome.
