Timberlake goes two and out; Kellogg, St. Maries each tie for fifth

In a game that requires sequence and clicking on all cylinders at once, Timberlake found it at times this season.
Friday afternoon, try as they might, wasn’t that day for the Tigers in the state 3A volleyball tournament at Lake City High.
Timberlake was eliminated by Gooding 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 after losing an opening-round match to Sugar-Salem 25-8, 25-7, 25-21, finishing the season 14-16.
“We’ve been battling trying to find our rhythm,” Timberlake coach Michelle Garwood said. “We’ve got a lot of new players we’ve been working with, and they’ve done a great job this year. But it takes everything all working together at the same time. We just weren’t passing well and didn’t have our libero against Sugar-Salem (Kylie Marneris) because she had a 102 degree temperature. The girls did a fabulous job, it not having a player like that changes your system a little bit. And rhythm is kind of what this game is about.”
Brooke Jessen had 13 digs, seven kills and five blocks, Samantha Wilfong 13 assists for Timberlake against Gooding. Taylor Suko had 15 digs and seven kills, Jessen 14 kills and Wilfong 10 assists against Sugar-Salem. Jessen and Wilfong are underclassmen.
“We’ll lose four kids (Suko, Marneris, Jaycee Jerome and Abbie Joyce are seniors), but will have our setter (Wilfong) back, which will be nice to have,” Garwood said. “This season was a lot of up and down, but our older girls, we knew we’d be training some new players and did a great job of being the glue to this team. They’ve got a lot of grit, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Kellogg, coming off its first league title in school history, opened with a thrilling 25-15, 25-27, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory over Snake River. The Wildcats then fell in the second round to Filer 25-11, 21-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-4, then were eliminated by Gooding 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 and finished tied for fifth.
Kellogg (16-5) was making its second straight trip to state, and fifth all-time, and is still seeking its first trophy.

St. Maries went 1-2 on the day and tied for fifth at Lakeland High’s Hawk Gym. The Lumberjacks (12-18) lost to Firth 25-20, 25-21, 25-15, defeated Central Idaho League foe Orofino 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, then was eliminated by Bear Lake 25-20, 25-16, 25-10.

Clark Fork, the North Star League and District 1 champions, went two and out at Lewiston High’s Booth Hall.
The Wampus Cats (12-5) lost to Rockland 25-9, 25-19, 25-14, then fell to Tri-Valley 25-17, 25-7, 25-22.
