COUNCIL: Vote for balance
Not long ago, Mayor Bloem and five council members were ready to remake McEuen in their image. Only Ron stood with us to retain Coeur d’Alene’s character.
An abbreviated timeline follows:
In the ’90s, Miller/Stauffer were selling condos in their first tower, touting the new park that was coming. (They later designed McEuen to become an adjunct between their two towers and The Resort.)
In 2009, Kennedy and Goodlander changed their votes regarding commercializing Tubbs due to public outcry. I was duped into believing they were responsive representatives. (However, they knew they would not be re-elected that fall, and it was time for them to begin their development of McEuen. They had to be responsive.)
In 2011, Bruning and Hassell were removed from office by two relative unknowns because they were ignoring the public in the McEuen process. The editorial headline was “McEuen Mandate.” It fell on deaf ears.
Enough of that.
My point is that we need to maintain a balance on our council. We need new blood, not more of the in crowd. Too much of the same was not a good thing for Coeur d’Alene then, and I don’t want to see it happen again.
Let’s mix it up and vote for Elaine Price and Lacey Moen to join Dan Gookin as our hardworking, homework-doing, question-asking true representatives. It will be a healthy step for our Council and for all of us.
