COEUR d’ALENE — Some coaches say that it’s good to get a little adversity out of the way before the postseason, just to have something to build on.

For the Lake City girls 4x200 relay, it came before the whistle in Thursday’s race on the first day of the 5A Region 1 meet at Coeur d’Alene High.

As senior Bridget Rieken stepped into the blocks, they broke, causing a brief delay in the start of the race while she grabbed another set of blocks.

“That’s never happened to me before,” Rieken said. “I’ve never had an issue with them breaking on me. When I went for my first run out, I noticed it felt weird and then they were blowing the whistle and I didn’t want to get disqualified. It’s kind of a mental thing and you get into the blocks like you do for every other race. This time, it was a little different and I had to reset everything.”

Lake City won the race in 1 minute, 44.48 seconds.

McKenzie Fletcher, a senior, is third in the relay, handing off to either Lilith Tweedy, or in the case of Thursday’s 4x200 relay, Angelyca Chapman.

“You definitely have to not let the people around you bother you,” said Fletcher, who also competes in the hurdles for Lake City. “You really have to know the way you run ... and not get into your own head about the race.”

Today, the same four will compete in the 4x400 relay — where they hold a 5A class high time of 4:00.25 — at Vollmer Bowl in Lewiston.

“It’s definitely more of a challenge,” Fletcher said of the 4x400. “But you’ve really got to know how to pace yourself and know your own limits. A lot of people go into the 4x400 relay thinking it’s the worst event. It’s usually cold and I think we just have a good time with it. We do a handshake with coach Reed and try to just have fun and go home happy.”

“It takes some of the pressure off knowing that they qualified to go to state today,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “It makes for a little less pressure in the 4x400, and the exchanges aren’t as fast of a pace as they were today. But there’s still some coaches’ anxiety. Most of them have state experience anyway, but it’s good to get their feet wet today.”

Tweedy, a sophomore, usually anchors on the 4x200, but was moved to second on the relay on Thursday.

“I’ve built up a lot of endurance through playing soccer, so I just try to go as fast as I can on the track,” Tweedy said. “The race (4x400), it hurts. But at the end of it, it’s an amazing feeling because you’ve worked so hard.”

Chapman, a sophomore who also runs cross country, ran the anchor leg of the 4x200 on Thursday. She also competes in the 400-meter dash for Lake City.

“My main event is the 500, so I’ve got to get a bit of an endurance run as well,” Chapman said. “At the beginning of the season, I’d go run with the distance runners to work on my endurance, and as the season progressed, we split it up between them and the sprinters. It’s a lot of work and takes a lot of mental strength as well.”

“They’re like business professionals,” Reed said. “I don’t have to say anything. They warm up the right way, they cool down the right way. Give credit to Bridget, it’s the fourth time she’s qualified for state, so she sets the tone. They’re very business like. They don’t get rattled and they’re a confident group. Meet days, I leave them alone a lot. They’re self-policed. They know what to do. They’re very mature in their approach in this thing.”

It wasn’t by much, but Coeur d’Alene High senior Nick Ancker hit a personal best 14 feet, 1 inch to win the 5A boys pole vault title.

“It was a really beautiful day and good day to compete,” said Ancker, who finished 10th at state last year. “It gives me really good confidence going into state. I’m going try to get on some bigger poles because I seem to bleed through them and they bend like noodles.”

Ancker will attend Washington State in the fall for academics, though he’s been entertaining the idea of competing at the college level. “Washington State told me I could walk on if I hit 15 feet,” Ancker said. “That’s my goal because it’s the school record, but I’m hoping to hit that at state.”

Post Falls senior Tyler Trengove won the 5A high jump in a school record 6 feet, 9 inches, then won the triple jump at 45 feet.

Team scores were not available.

The 5A and 4A regional meets conclude today in Lewiston starting at 2 p.m.
