COEUR d’ALENE — The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored two local students as DAR essay contest winners.

Students in fifth through eighth grades wrote about the women’s suffrage movement while high school students compared the technology of modern ships with what was used on Christopher Columbus's ships.

Sixth-grader Wyatt Jensen, an Athol home-schooler, was selected as the American history chapter winner for his essay on women’s suffrage. He was recognized at the April meeting of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter.

Elizabeth Wohali, an 11th-grade home-schooler from Athol, was recognized as the Christopher Columbus chapter and state winner at an awards luncheon held at the state conference of the Idaho State Society DAR held last month in Coeur d’Alene. Her award was presented by the state chair of DAR’s American History Committee, Judi Wutzke. Elizabeth’s essay advanced to the regional level where she also won first place. It is now being judged at the national level.

Both contests are open to students in public, private or parochial schools and to those who are homeschooled. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. Topics for the 2019-2020 contests will be announced in the fall.

DAR membership is open to any woman 18 or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. Lt. George Farragut Chapter meets the third Friday of the month, September through May.
