POST FALLS — As the winners of Thursday’s District 1 Meet of Champions were announced, they were dubbed the ‘Champion of Champions.’

Not quite yet.

But they’re getting closer.

A few that found themselves on top of the podium squared off away from the track, as seniors Tyler Trengove of 5A Post Falls and Chase Gardom of 3A Timberlake competed in the long jump at the 19th annual Meet of Champions at Post Falls High.

Trengove is the defending 5A champion in the high jump and long jump, while Gardom won the 3A triple jump last year.

“It’s competitive, but also really fun to compete here,” Gardom said. “To see the best of the best, it brings a lot out of you as far as being competitive.”

In the long jump, Gardom edged Trengove with a jump of 21 feet, 8 inches. Trengove was runner-up at 21-3 1/2.

“I just wanted to get a decent mark for a change,” Trengove said. “I haven’t been jumping that great in the long jump or triple jump this year. But as the competition gets better, I tend to do a lot better.”

Trengove’s jump of 6 feet, 6 inches — a meet record — won the high jump.

Trengove has won the high jump in each of the five events he’s competed in this year. After a season high of 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches at the Moscow Invitational (April 12), Trengove has been at 6-4 in wins at the Pasco Invitational (April 13) and Blue Devil Legends Invitational in Walla Walla on April 20.

“I’ve finally started to do a lot better in the last three meets,” Trengove said. “It might be the sunlight, rather than it being overcast and rainy. I’m using this meet as practice, and then go hard at districts and state.”

Gardom got one back on Trengove, winning the triple jump in a meet record 44 feet, 8 inches. The mark broke Trengove’s mark of 43-10 1/2 in 2018.

“Chase had a good football season, a good basketball season and is now into the track season,” Timberlake coach Brian Kluss said. “He gives us everything he has when he’s out here, and does the same thing in practice as well. He’s a good athlete, just a really, really good athlete that loves to come to the big meets and challenge himself.”

As sometimes happens at track meets, Gardom competed in the high jump and long jump simutatiously. While waiting in the long jump, he jumped over the 4-foot high fence that surrounds the track and the football field and cleared the mark of 5-6 in the high jump.

“It’s unique some of the things he can do for us as a jumper,” Kluss said. “We’ve had some state champs, but haven’t had that guy that when you go to a meet you know he’s going to be way out there.”

Gardom also competes on Timberlake’s 4x400 relay team.

“We try to limit his jumps because he does so many of the jumps (events) this year,” Kluss said. “We’re really trying to cut it down to a couple of jumps in each event a day. We extended it one jump in the triple because he was close to the school record (45-1 1/2), then he got it. Then he did one more in the long jump because he was close again (22 feet) and got that one too. He does go after that.”

Gardom is undecided about his future plans.

“I’m looking to triple jump in college somewhere,” Gardom said. “I’ve been talking a lot with Spokane Falls.”

Gardom’s sister, Anna, throws the javelin at Idaho State, winning last year’s Big Sky Conference title in the event.

“We’ve talked about me going there a little bit, but it’s also about what’s best for me and my situation,” Chase Gardom said.

To Post Falls junior Sydney Shanahan, it was just another day on the track in the 1,600-meter run, winning in 5 minutes, 17.43 seconds.

“It’s just a race to me,” said Shanahan, who also won the 3,200. “Sometimes, I kind of forget what lap I’m on, so I just lose myself in the race because I’m focused on how I’m doing. I’m just focused on getting a good time.”

Lake City’s Jacob Schnatter won the 200, finished second in the 100 and took third in the long jump.

“Jake puts a ton of time in,” Reed said. “Track is really his thing. It’s what he focuses on. I’ve seen a ton of improvement and how he approaches everything. He’s really businesslike and knows what he’s doing, and he’s matured quite a bit. He’s a good, natural overall athlete. Assuming he gets to state, he could have a great state meet.”

Angelyca Chapman of Lake City won the 200 and 400 individually, and ran winning legs in the 4x200 and 4x400, which set a meet record in 4:00.98. McKenzie Fletcher also won the 300 hurdles in addition to relay wins in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. Bridget Rieken and Lilith Tweedy also make up both the 4x200 and 4x200 relay team.

“Both Angelyca and McKenzie had fantastic days today,” Reed said. “A lot of the credit for what Angelyca is doing goes to my wife (Lake City cross country coach and assistant track and field coach Heather Harmon-Reed) and the distance stuff she’s been doing. Bridget (Rieken) might have had her best high school meet as well. She does a fantastic job in starting all three of our relays and has been super solid all year.”

“It was a little breezy, but not that bad,” Post Falls coach and meet director Wade Quesnell said. “We had some good times, and good individual efforts. Hopefully it was a good warmup for the regional and state meet for these teams. That’s what it’s all about.”
