No place for a hippie commune

I read with interest the article regarding Mr. Oberholzer and his issue with his campground that he is running. I am all for the people being able to use their land for what they would like but his property rights should not infringe on those of his neighbors. If I owned a million-dollar property on the lake, I too would be opposed to this eyesore which probably looks worse in person than this picture indicates. I think the line where he says he is just trying to make a buck is all of the information needed about this situation.

I went to Mr. Oberholzer’s Facebook page and found that he is from California. We seem to be attracting a fair number of people from our neighbor to the south who think that all North Idaho is good for is to make a buck.

If you read his Facebook postings, most of them are encouraging other Californians to come here to make some fast money. There seems to be a blatant disregard for many of the rules and regulations that come with living here.

I think that much of that mindset comes from living in a liberal state where virtually anything goes, even if it is at someone else’s expense.

I find it appalling that he thinks the answer to the bathroom problem is to send them down the street to a public restroom to use the facilities that the rest of us pay taxes to maintain. Maybe it’s no surprise, though, when you consider that defecating in the street in the state which he came from is not the exception now but is a right protected by the state. I would suggest that I bet every time those people had to go to the bathroom, they did not drive down the hill to go.

I endorse changing the rules and statutes to protect other homeowners and their property values. I would suggest that should he want to have a hippie commune, that he move back to California, where there seems to be no shortage of people who would love to rent a bus and live in an area with no restroom facilities.

We need to keep North Idaho the beautiful desirable place to live that it has been. The reason most of us live here has never been all about making a buck. I hope the county commissioners will quickly enact some laws that will make sure this kind of situation does not happen in the future.
