UPDATE: 4:01 p.m.

Avista released a notice reminding customers to remain safe and prepare for potential power outages in response to this evening’s forecasted thunderstorms. The utility company makes the following suggestions if you lose power:

- Stay away from downed power lines.

- Turn off all appliances that were on before your power went out.

- Unplug electronic equipment, including computers.

- Leave a light or radio on as a sensory alert that will indicate power has been restored.

- Do not wire an emergency generator into a home’s electrical system, unless there is a disconnect switch to separate generated power from Avista.

- Use an outside generator to run only specific appliances. Do not use an indoor generator, as carbon monoxide fumes could poison a household.

- If you lose power, report the outage to Avista through their mobile app or by calling (800) 227-9187.

North Idaho residents are likely to see thunderstorms this afternoon and into the evening, the National Weather Service reports.

The weather service anticipates small hail and periods of gusty wind, ranging from 30 to 45 mph. The thunderstorm is expected to begin between 2 and 3 p.m. and last until about 10 p.m. There is likely to be an “initial push” this afternoon and a “second wave” later this evening.

While the Coeur d’Alene area is under a marginal risk of severe storm activity, the Lewiston and Pullman areas reportedly have a greater chance of severe thunderstorms.

Moist conditions and heat are ideal conditions for summer storms.
