Lums rally past visiting Canyon Ridge
COEUR d’ALENE — A five-run, fifth-inning rally evened the score, then two more runs in the sixth led the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen past visiting Canyon Ridge, 9-8, in the opener of an American Legion AA doubleheader on Monday at Thorco Field.
Information on the second game was unavailable at press time.
Coeur d’Alene (15-7-1) fell behind 7-2 in the opener before rallying in the fifth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Breyson Coppess and Landen Thompson pulled the Lums within a run, then a Peyton Childers sacrifice fly tied the score at 7.
After Canyon Ridge scored a run in the top of the sixth, Coppess hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning to put Coeur d’Alene ahead. With two runners on in the top of the seventh, Lums pitcher Jake Brown snared a line drive and doubled off a baserunner to close out the game.
Coppess went 3-for-4 and knocked in five runs for Coeur d’Alene, while Brown had a double, two runs scored and earned the win on the mound with two innings of relief.
Alex Karns added two hits and two runs scored for the Lums, who return to action on Thursday against the Columbia Basin Riverdogs at a tournament in Bozeman, Mont.
