A local group of horse riders recently helped prevent a fire near Chilco Mountain — and wants to warn hikers.
While preparing to clear the trail that leads up to Chilco North, members of the Panhandle Back Country Horsemen came upon a rock fire pit full of smoldering logs and coals. Strong wind threatened to blow sparks beyond the pit, into the surrounding brush and trees. The group used its drinking water to help put out the fire.
Panhandle Back Country Horsemen President Karen Kimball sent this photo to The Press as a warning for hikers. She warned hikers not to put large logs on a fire and leave them burning.
“It would be a disaster to have a forest fire on that majestic trail,” Kimball wrote.
