MILITARY
Lt. j.g. Steven Hallgren, a 2011 Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy graduate and Coeur d’Alene native, is participating in a rigorous training process that transforms officers into U.S. naval aviators.
Hallgren is a student pilot with the “Golden Eagles” of Training Squadron (VT) 22, based in Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas. The squadron flies T-45C Goshawk aircraft.
“I like the visceral things that come up with being assigned to a plane and the g-force that comes with flying a jet,” Hallgren said.
Hallgren credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in Coeur d’Alene.
“I developed really good study habits from my time in school and I carried this over with me both into the Naval Academy and for my flight training,” he said.
The T-45C Goshawk is a tandem-seat, jet trainer aircraft powered by a twin-spool non-afterburn turbofan engine with 5,527 pounds of thrust and airspeed of 645 mph.
Ensign Derek Hansen, a 2013 Coeur d’Alene High School graduate and Athol native, supports the training of naval aviation personnel and air operations.
Hansen is a student pilot serving with Training Air Wing 4 at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. Training Air Wing 4 oversees Primary flight training in T-6B Texan II aircraft and Advanced multi-engine flight training in T-44C Pegasus aircraft at four squadrons on base.
Currently, Training Air Wing 4 produces approximately 600 newly qualified aviators each year.
A Navy student pilot is responsible for learning all the ins and outs of naval aircraft needed to successfully execute missions for the fleet.
“I enjoy the freedom of being in the air and the opportunity to push myself both physically and mentally,” Hansen said.
Hansen credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in Athol.
“I learned the benefits of hard work, teamwork and the importance of family,” Hansen said. “These traits have set me up for success both as a man and naval officer.”
