Wilfred Wayne Stan, 74

Wilfred Wayne Stan, known as “Will,” passed away Monday, June 10, 2019, at the age of 74 years.

He was born Dec. 11, 1944, in Spokane, Wash., to Edwin and Dolores Stan. He was the oldest of three sons. He married Valerie Popp in 1966 and they had their only child, Jeffery, in August of 1967.

Will started baking at the young age of 9 years old, at Stricks Bakery in Spokane. Will was a great baker and loved making wonderful, sweet treats for all the locals. He and his former wife, Valerie, owned the Cake Box Bakery, in Post Falls, Idaho, from 1973 to 1976 and Sugar Shack Bakery in Coeur d’Alene from 1977 to 1991. Loggers and mill workers always knew they could stop at 4 a.m. to get a hot doughnut on the way to work. No one could make a shortbread cookie like his! Will’s son, Jeff, grew up in the bakery, and learned the trade from him. Will loved the time spent with his son at the “bench.” Many locals still ask Jeff if they can get his dad’s cookie recipes.

Will decided it was time to give up the long hours and retired from baking in 1991. He furthered his education in electrical and become an electrician. He started River City Infrared and traveled the Northwest, working as a thermographer until he retired in 2012.

Some of Will’s hobbies included water and snow skiing and bowling. He spent many summer hours water skiing. Will was also well known in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene bowling community. He started bowling as a youth for North Bowl Cubs, in Spokane, and continued to bowl through the years, until he had to give it up due to Alzheimer’s. He was a pin-chaser as a teenager. He loved the sport and was a great coach. He taught his grandchildren, Sean and Kayla, how to bowl and made sure they knew bowling etiquette. They are both great bowlers today because of all the practice bowling with Grandpa Stan. Will had lots of fun bowling tournaments and leagues with his friends and family and all those pot games with the guys at Lake City Lanes.

Will’s grandchildren were his pride and joy. He spent lots of time with them, bowling, swimming and going to the movies. When they were young they would stay in his motor home with him and he would take them shopping and buy them anything they wanted. You always knew how much they meant to him by the smile on his face when he was with them.

Will is survived by former wife, Valerie Stan; son, Jeff (Kym) Stan; grandson, Sean (Kelsey) Stan; granddaughter, Kayla (Josh) Howell; great-grandsons, Hunter and Hoyt and soon-to-be Lucy.

No service will be held, per his request.

Special thanks to Dad’s second family at Rose Terrace “C” house, where they deeply cared for him and made him feel at home, and Auburn Crest Hospice for the wonderful love and care showed to Dad in his final days. You all made his days a little brighter.
