Band of babies

COEUR d'ALENE — It's getting to be osprey nesting season on Lake Coeur d’Alene pilings, and that means a unique opportunity for wildlife lovers.
Those aboard the annual osprey cruise from from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13, will observe retired wildlife biologist Wayne Melquist as he bands baby ospreys from a ladder in a boat. The cruise is sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce’s Natural Resources Committee.
"Wayne's 30-plus years of experience banding and studying the osprey are evident as the mother bird protests and whistles at the chicks to lay flat and play dead," said Sandy Emerson. Emerson is one of the organizers of the Cougar Bay cruise aboard the two-deck Mish-an-Nock.
"Back on board, he will explain the process he goes through and share experiences he has had with the participants. It's a one-of-a-kind event," Emerson said.
Wildlife and waterfowl experts from the Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Fish and Game and Audubon Society will also provide information and answer questions. Mounted and live bird displays and other exhibits are part of the program.
"It is always a treat and often other birds are seen as well," said Emerson, adding that it may be the only wildlife cruise of its type in the world.
The cruise, which has been held for about 20 years, costs $20 per adult. Children 12 and younger accompanied by a paying adult are free. Family rates are $45 for two adults and three children up to 18. Seniors and students are $15.
For more information or to make reservations, call the Chamber of Commerce at 208-664-3194.
Boarding starts at 8:30 a.m. on the east side of the Boardwalk Marina near Tubbs Hill and McEuen Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring cameras, sunscreen, binoculars, sunglasses and a sun hat.
