PRESIDENT: Questions to answer

The positive note that Michael Quinn struck in his letter on June 9 (Sunday) was welcome. It got me to thinking over the question of what characteristics would make you vote for someone to be president of the U.S. Would it be emotion or sympathy for the D-day veterans, described so well by Quinn? Maybe you would first decide on the purpose or over-arching goal of the government.

Is it sense of community and equal opportunity for all? Is it economic stability brought about by a favorable business climate? Is it military might where the U.S. is stronger than any other country? Is it preserving for the following generations a clean and debt-free world? Or is it a global economy where nations work together so that all peoples might have equal opportunity and peace to follow their dreams?

Once that is worked out, what characteristics would be advantageous to achieving the goal you chose? Is it feeling empathy? Is it honesty that makes you trust the government? Is it knowledge and experience or the ability to listen to others? Goodness, this is getting complex. Maybe it should be a contest with a prize for the best answer.
