Opus VI: An afternoon of Chamber music in tribute to CDAide
Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society (CDACMS) will pay tribute to all the good work CDAide does for our community with an evening of chamber music starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. This free concert will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Coeur d’Alene, 521 E. Lakeside Ave.
CDAide is a local nonprofit that works to provide support to those members of our community working in area restaurants and hotels, by providing resources and emergency assistance as needed, as well as building positive relationships.
The CdABrass will open their set with an arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, movement 3. This concerto is known for the inclusion of a high melodic trumpet part. Rumor has it that it was the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 that inspired Paul McCartney to include a piccolo trumpet in the Beatles tune “Penny Lane.” The next three pieces are intended to be a prelude the Fourth of July. “A Soldier’s Life in WWI” is a medley of tunes sung by soldiers from the Great War. They will conclude their portion of the concert with two familiar pieces; “America” and “Yankee Doodle.”
The Flutonics join our tribute with a diverse slate of pieces. They will open with the medley of music from Super Mario Brothers. That will be followed by the “Pizzicato Polka” and George Wu’s arrangement of “Hallelujah.” They will finish with “Zanarkand” arranged by group member, Priscilla Blythe.
The Northwest Saxophone Quartet, a new group performing with the Opus, will be performing a movement from the Philip Glass saxophone quartet and an original work by David Larson, a member of the quartet.
The duo of Diana Clemens and Colleen Hunter return to our concert series and will play two original compositions by Diana. They will be performing the fourth movement of Diana’s award winning concerto.
Also returning to our program, the North West Brass Quintet will be performing two pieces. The first piece, “Canzona per sonare No. 1” by Giovanni Gabrieli, dates back to the beginnings of brass ensemble music. The second piece is a classic from John Philip Sousa’s book, the “Liberty Bell March.”
The concert will conclude by combining the two brass groups to perform “Chelsea Suite.” Chelsea is a small town in southern Michigan that evokes the best of “Main Street USA” — one high school, one tavern, two stoplights and a climate where everyone knows their neighbors.
The CDACMS allows local musicians a chance to perform chamber music and fits right in with the ever-developing Coeur d’Alene arts identity. This area has numerous opportunities for musicians to participate in large groups, both instrumental and vocal. The hope is that these concerts will provide opportunities for musicians to put together small ensembles and have a place to perform.
