Watson to participate

in Team USA training camp

Anton Watson — a Coeur d’Alene native and Gonzaga signee who guided Gonzaga Prep to a second consecutive Washington state 4A title — is among 33 athletes at the USA Basketball men’s U19 World Cup training camp that begins on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The camp features 33 elite athletes, including nine USA gold medalists, 15 athletes with prior experience from at least one USA training camp and nine newcomers.

The camp will be used to determine the final 12-member roster for the World Cup Team, which will be selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee.

Gonzaga Prep went 102-6 in games with Watson over the past four seasons, including two state titles and two third-place finishes. Watson averaged 18.7 points per game over his four-year varsity career.

Finalists for the team are expected to be announced next Tuesday, with the 2019 FIBA World Cup being held in Greece from June 29 to July 7 in Heraklion, Greece.

NIC women’s basketball to

host camps

June 25-28

The North Idaho College women’s basketball team and coaches will hold three separate camps June 25-28 at Rolly Williams Court on the school’s campus featuring instruction from NIC coach Chris Carlson, assistant coach Korina Baker and several NIC basketball players.

A comprehensive fundamentals camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and focus on basic basketball skills for all players in third through seventh grade. There is a 50-player limit.

A guard/post camp will be held to develop individual position sills for players in sixth through 12th grade from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. There is a 30-player limit for this camp.

The final camp is a shooting camp, which focuses on extensive shooting instruction, basic fundamentals, advanced footwork and shooting mentality for players in sixth through 12th grade from 3 to 4:30 p.m. There is a 36-player limit for this camp.

Cost is $75 per session, $125 for two sessions, or $175 for all three sessions.

Chiefs preseason

scheduled released

The Spokane Chiefs will open the preseason in a Labor Day weekend tournament hosted by the Everett Silvertips Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at Angel of the Winds Arena, the Western Hockey League announced.

Spokane will face Portland on Aug. 30 at 3 p.m., tournament host Everett on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m., then conclude play against Vancouver on Sept. 1 at 11:30 a.m.

The following weekend, Spokane travels to the Tri-Cities tournament in Kennewick to face Portland on Sept. 6 at 3 p.m., then host Tri-City on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.

Spokane concludes the preseason with a game at Tri-Cities on Sept. 14 at 7:05 p.m.
