Bryan Duncan, who kept the Coeur d’Alene High boys program among the state’s best, has resigned as head coach of the Viking boys and girls golf teams.

Duncan, who took over as head coach in 2005, earlier announced he was retiring as a teacher at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Bryan’s knowledge and experience and networks make him difficult to replace,” Coeur d’Alene High athletic director Mike Randles said. “He is well rounded in the world of education, having been a teacher, assistant principal, AD, and, of course, a coach. He is one of those guys who can anticipate challenges in nearly every scenario, whether that’s a dogleg on a certain hole, the weather, or the complexities of hosting a golf tournament. You can only replace that knowledge with experience, which is a hard-won quality.”

Laura Curtis has been hired as swim coach at Coeur d’Alene High.

- Longtime Lake City swim coach Bob Wood, also a staple in the Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team program, has retired. Michelle Sobek, a teacher at Lake City, is the new head coach.

- Brandon Haas, head girls basketball coach at Genesis Prep, stepped down to become athletic director at the school. He went 29-21 in two seasons, guiding the Jaguars to a runner-up finish at state in 2018 and the consolation title at state in ’19.

Before that, he coached in the Genesis Prep boys program for three years, as junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach under head coach Marsell Colbert.

Haas replaces Conrad Underdahl, who retired.

“Taking this job is something that has been in the works for a little while,” Haas said. “It’s going to be hard not coaching. It’s been a passion of mine since I stopped playing competitively, and coaching for Genesis has been so rewarding. But this is a great opportunity. We have a great coaching staff for all of our teams and I am extremely excited to help Genesis keep growing in the same direction that we have always been headed toward.”

Ty Brearley, an assistant under Haas last season, will replace Haas as head coach.

“Ty is a great fit for the girls basketball program,” Haas said. “He graduated from Post Falls but played for Marsell in high school at Genesis while we were still in the Mountain Christian League.

Brearley attended Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, where he was a manager and graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball team for a total of three seasons. Last season, he helped with the Genesis Prep girls and boys basketball teams. His mother, Shella, is the director of athletic operations at Genesis Prep.

“He has an amazing passion for the game,” Haas said. “The way he prepares both on and off the court will help make Genesis Prep women’s basketball a successful program in more than just wins and losses on a scoreboard.”

- St. Maries is looking for a new head girls basketball coach and a new head girls soccer coach.

John Cordell, St. Maries principal and a former assistant girls basketball coach for the Lumberjacks, took over head coaching duties this past season following the resignation of Jay Sines.

Kenny Osier coached the Lumberjacks girls soccer team for one season, and stepped down following the graduation of his daughter Aubree, a senior midfielder.

- Gabbie Saurette stepped down after one season as cross country coach at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy.
