Hobo gets a day in a jail

| June 11, 2019 1:00 AM

A Vermont man arrested last year for hitching a ride on a freight train was back in a Coeur d’Alene courtroom after being picked up on a warrant.

Aidan J. Mallet, 21, of East Calais, pleaded guilty in First District Magistrate Court last week to two misdemeanor counts of stealing a ride.

The charges stem from last summer, when he hitched a ride on a train near Rathdrum and was detained near Highway 53 and McGuire Road by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway policeman.

The footloose Mallet was turned over to deputies but failed to appear in court. A warrant issued in July for his arrest was served this month.

First District Magistrate James Combo sentenced Mallet to one day in jail and ordered he pay $157.50 in fines and court costs.
