Bucket list adventure is close to home

| June 11, 2019 10:21 PM

Several years ago Bert and I decided we needed to do an annual adventure and made a list of things we hadn’t done but wanted to do. So far we’ve checked off jet boating in Hell’s Canyon, whale watching in the San Juan Islands, riding the Route of the Hiawatha, white water rafting on the Clark Fork River and taking a plane ride over the Grand Canyon. Floating the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River is an ongoing summer favorite for us.

I realized that after decades of living here and loving the lake and rivers I’ve not experienced parasailing on Lake Coeur d’Alene so that’s top of the list for 2019. It made me curious what other locals had not experienced in the category of vacationing in our own backyard.

Sue Sims said riding the Route of the Hiawatha is on her list, Barb Smalley said she’d never been to Stateline Speedway, Kim Edmundson wants to zip line, Taryn Thompson plans to parasail and also included the ropes course at Farragut, ziplining on Silver Mountain and the natural rock water slides at Priest Lake on her bucket list.

Quite a few of my friends have parasailed over the lake but Jeanne Emerson’s story made me laugh. “My mom, Mildred Tanner, parasailed for her 85th birthday. And just like Queen Elizabeth, she wanted to take her purse up with her.” I promise to leave my purse on dry land.

So remember we live in an area that people travel from all over to enjoy ... adventure is close to home!

Tracey Vaughn realized that if anyone who didn’t know her saw her recent “to do” list that included arsenic, get murder boxes to folks, set up murder times and bury Joseph, she might have some ‘splainin’ to do. But those who do know that she runs Coeur d’Alene Murder Mystery Theater wouldn’t think it’s an unusual list at all.

Friday is Flag Day and we celebrate the 242nd anniversary of the Continental Congress approving the design for our nation’s flag, which they did on June 14, 1777. American Legion Post 154 is holding a public flag retirement ceremony from 10-11 a.m. on Flag Day at the Lions Club House in Rathdrum.

The respectful and proper disposal of flags is quite interesting and moving. If you’ve never experienced a flag retirement ceremony, I encourage you to attend with your family.

Father’s Day evokes sweet memories of my own father as well as the father that fate and providence brought into the lives of my three daughters in 1986 when Bert and I were married. Three daughters, two of whom were teenagers, created a ready-made family and no shortage of teen angst and drama. But through it all for over three decades Bert has loved unconditionally these daughters of ours. He wasn’t there at their birth but has been their Northern star through every important milestone and crossroad.

For every man who has loved and raised their children by marriage, blessings tenfold. I’m convinced there’s a special place in Heaven for you all. Happy Father’s Day!
